EU Funding#
This section has details on mechanisms of funding EU projects.
Structural and Investment Funds#
ESI funds:
support the territorial, economic and social cohesion of Europe's regions, as well as their resilience and recovery from the crisis faced in the past years.
Framework Programmes#
The EU conducted a series of ‘Framework Programs’ (FP) for funding research, culminating with FP7 in 2013. The framework programs were succeeded by the Horizon programs starting with Horizon 2020.
Historical#
Horizon 2020#
Horizon 2020 was the EU’s multi-annual research and innovation program for funding ‘excellence in research and innovation’, which ran from 2014 to 2020.
Present#
Horizon Europe#
Horizon Europe is the Horizon 2020 successor and current EU funding framework for research and innovation funding. It runs from 2021 to 2027.
Joint Undertakings#
Joint Undertakings (JUs) are an EU mechanism to set up public-private partnerships to integrate industrial research.
The members of these JUs are typically the European Union (represented by the European Commission)
and industry-led associations, as well as other partners. JUs adopt their own research agenda and
award funding mainly on the basis of open calls for proposals.
Research Infrastructures#
Research Infrastructures (RIs) are facilities that provide resources and services for research communities to conduct research and foster innovation in the EU, which may be comprised of major physical or digital research assets.
Research Infrastructures (RIs) are facilities that provide resources and services for research communities to conduct research and foster innovation in the EU, which may be comprised of major physical or digital research assets.
They are a core element of the Horizon Europe program via consolidation of European research know-how and facilities.
Important RI related entities are the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) which decides future policy on RI development and European Research Infrastructure Consortia (ERICs) which are legal entities charged with building and maintaining long-term sustainable RIs.
European Digital Infrastructure Consortia (EDICs) are similar to ERICS, but focus on setting up multi-country digital projects. This page: https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/policies/edic has a list of some early EDICs.
